Our Step-by-Step Driveway Paving Process
Every driveway we install follows the same thorough process — because taking shortcuts at any stage compromises the longevity and appearance of the finished surface. Here is exactly what happens from your first call to your last inspection:
-
1Free Estimate & Project Planning One of our experienced estimators visits your property to measure the area, assess existing conditions, identify drainage requirements, and discuss your preferences. We provide a detailed written quote, typically within 48 hours — no surprises, no hidden fees.
-
2Demolition & Removal of Existing Pavement For replacement jobs, we break up and remove the existing driveway material using skid steers and excavating equipment. All demolished material is loaded and hauled away. Old asphalt is recyclable — the industry's most recycled material — so nothing goes to waste.
-
3Subgrade Excavation & Shaping We excavate to the required depth (typically 8–12 inches total for a residential driveway) to reach a stable subgrade. The base soil is shaped and graded to achieve the correct cross-slope and longitudinal drainage — typically 1.5–2% grade to carry water off the driveway surface. Soft spots are identified and over-excavated, then filled with stable granular material.
-
4Granular Sub-Base Installation & Compaction A minimum 6-inch layer of compacted Granular A gravel is spread and compacted in lifts using a vibratory roller or plate compactor. This stable, well-draining base is the most critical investment in your driveway's longevity — it distributes load evenly and prevents frost heave. We never skip this step or reduce the specified depth.
-
5Edge Preparation & Forming Driveway edges are defined precisely using string lines or forms. Transitions to the garage floor, public sidewalk, or street curb are carefully planned to ensure smooth, seamless connections at the correct elevations. Edge transitions are where many inferior driveway jobs fail — we take extra care here.
-
6Hot-Mix Asphalt Paving Fresh hot-mix asphalt (delivered at 140–165°C from a certified Ontario plant) is spread by our asphalt paver to the specified depth — typically 2.5 to 3 inches compacted for residential driveways. The mix is levelled and shaped, with raking crews hand-finishing around edges, curves, and transitions for a clean, uniform surface.
-
7Rolling & Compaction Immediately after paving, steel drum rollers compact the asphalt from the outside edges toward the centre — achieving proper density (minimum 92% of maximum theoretical density). Multiple passes are made at precise temperatures to lock in the final surface texture. Edge rolling ensures clean, durable perimeter lines that won't crumble.
-
8Final Inspection & Cleanup Our foreman walks the entire driveway with you, checking for uniformity, grade, and surface quality. All excess material, equipment, and debris are removed. We place clear signage and advise you on the cure period — typically 24–48 hours before vehicle use, and 30 days before heavy vehicles or sharp turns on hot days.
