Asphalt Paving

How long does a new asphalt driveway last? +
A properly installed asphalt driveway typically lasts 20 to 30 years with regular maintenance, including sealing every 2–3 years and prompt crack repair. Driveways that are never sealed or maintained may need replacement in 10–15 years. The quality of the sub-base preparation is the single biggest factor in longevity — which is why we never cut corners on grading and compaction.
How soon can I drive on my new asphalt? +
We recommend waiting 24–48 hours before driving on newly laid asphalt under normal summer temperatures. In cooler weather, or for heavy vehicles like trucks and RVs, we recommend waiting 72 hours or more. New asphalt is soft and can be marked by sharp turns or stationary loads — avoid these for the first few weeks even after it feels firm.
How much does a new asphalt driveway cost in Hamilton? +
In the Hamilton area, homeowners typically pay $4 to $12 per square foot for a new asphalt driveway, depending on size, existing conditions, removal of old materials, and site preparation required. A standard 2-car driveway (approximately 500–600 sq ft) generally ranges from $2,000 to $7,000 fully installed. We always provide a free, detailed written quote — contact us to get an accurate estimate for your specific project.
What's the difference between asphalt and concrete for driveways? +
Both are excellent choices, but they differ in several ways:

Asphalt costs less upfront ($4–$12/sq ft), installs quickly, handles freeze-thaw cycles well, and is easy to repair. It needs sealing every 2–3 years and typically lasts 20–30 years with maintenance.

Concrete costs more upfront ($15–$35/sq ft) but lasts 30–50 years, requires less maintenance, and offers more finish options (exposed aggregate, stamped, coloured). It can stain from oil and may crack in extreme freeze-thaw cycles without proper joint placement.

We're happy to walk you through both options during your free estimate visit.

Sealing

How often should I seal my asphalt driveway? +
We recommend seal coating your asphalt driveway every two to three years in the Hamilton area. New asphalt should cure for at least 90 days before the first seal coat application. If your driveway is turning grey, showing small surface cracks, or looks faded and dry, it's time to seal — regardless of when it was last done. Regular sealing dramatically extends pavement life and keeps it looking great.
When is the best time of year to seal a driveway? +
Sealing is best done when temperatures are consistently above 10°C (50°F) and no rain is expected for 24–48 hours — making late spring through early fall the ideal window in Hamilton. We typically begin taking sealing bookings in April and are busy through October. We recommend booking early in the season to secure your preferred date.
How long does sealing take and when can I use my driveway? +
Most residential driveways take 1 to 3 hours to seal. Commercial parking lots may take a full day. After sealing, you should stay off the surface for 24 to 48 hours to allow proper curing. Avoid making sharp turns or parking in the same spot for the first week, as fresh sealant can be soft in hot weather.

Concrete

How long does concrete take to cure before I can use it? +
Concrete gains strength progressively. You can typically walk on it after 24 hours and drive on it after 7 days. Full structural strength (as measured by engineers) is reached at 28 days. Avoid heavy vehicles, sharp objects, and de-icing salts during the first winter — these can damage fresh concrete surfaces.
Will my concrete driveway crack? +
All concrete can develop hairline cracks over time due to natural ground movement and Ontario's freeze-thaw cycles. However, proper installation significantly reduces this risk. We use control joints (pre-planned weak points where cracking can occur in a controlled way), correct reinforcement (rebar or wire mesh), proper sub-base compaction, and the right water-to-cement ratio. Structural cracking from poor installation is what we eliminate — minor hairline cracking is a normal characteristic of the material.

Pressure Washing

Is pressure washing safe for all surfaces? +
Not all surfaces should be pressure washed at the same settings. High-pressure washing is ideal for concrete, asphalt, brick, and interlock. Softer surfaces like wood decks, painted siding, and roof shingles require a soft-wash approach — lower pressure with specialized cleaning solutions. Our team knows the right technique for every surface and will never use a method that risks damage to your property.
Can pressure washing remove oil stains from my driveway? +
Yes — pressure washing combined with a degreasing agent is very effective at removing oil and fuel stains from concrete and asphalt surfaces. Very old or deeply set stains may lighten but not disappear completely. We'll give you an honest assessment before we start. For asphalt, sealing after a thorough wash will help obscure any remaining discolouration.

Landscaping

Do you do full landscaping design or just hardscaping? +
Our specialty is hardscaping and site work — the non-living elements of your outdoor space including grading, excavation, interlocking stone, retaining walls, drainage systems, patios, and walkways. We also supply and install sod and topsoil to complete projects. For full garden design with plantings, we recommend partnering with a local landscape designer — we're happy to work alongside them on your project.
My yard has drainage problems — can you fix it? +
Absolutely. Drainage issues — standing water, basement flooding, erosion — are among the most common problems we solve. We offer lot grading, re-grading, French drain installation, catch basin installation, and surface drainage solutions. Proper grading directs water away from your home's foundation, preventing costly structural damage. This is one of the most important investments you can make in your property.
