Outdoor Transformation — From the Ground Up
At Alpha Paving Solutions, our landscaping services focus on what we do best: transforming the functional foundation of your outdoor space. We specialize in sod installation, interlocking pavers, drainage systems, and lot grading — the four services that have the biggest impact on both how your property looks and how it functions year-round in Hamilton's challenging climate.
Sod Installation
Sod is the fastest way to establish a lush, healthy lawn — giving you an instantly green, usable surface in a single day. We source fresh-cut sod from reputable Ontario sod farms for maximum root viability and install it on properly prepared soil for the best possible establishment rate.
Our Sod Installation Process:
- 1Soil preparationWe till, level, and amend the existing soil with topsoil and starter fertilizer to create the ideal growing environment.
- 2Grading for drainageThe area is graded to slope away from structures, ensuring water drains off rather than pooling on the new lawn.
- 3Sod delivery & installationFresh-cut sod is delivered and laid the same day in a staggered brick pattern, tight joints, and rolled to ensure firm soil contact for root establishment.
- 4Post-install wateringWe thoroughly water the new sod immediately after installation and provide care instructions to ensure successful establishment over the following weeks.
Interlocking Pavers — Driveways, Patios & Steps
Interlocking pavers are the premium alternative to poured concrete or asphalt for driveways, patios, walkways, and steps. Made from high-strength precast concrete or natural stone, pavers are individually set in a sand bed over a compacted base — creating a surface that's beautiful, durable, and remarkably easy to repair if ever damaged.
Paver Driveways
Elegant, strong enough for vehicles, and available in dozens of colours and patterns.
Paver Patios
Create an outdoor living room — perfect for entertaining, fire pits, and outdoor furniture.
Paver Steps
Defined, safe entry steps in natural stone or concrete pavers that complement your home's exterior.
Paver Installation Process:
- 1ExcavationWe excavate 8–12 inches deep (more for driveways) to reach stable subgrade and remove organic material that could cause settling.
- 2Compacted gravel baseA minimum 6-inch compacted Granular A base is installed and compacted in lifts, providing a stable, non-frost-heaving foundation for the pavers above.
- 3Bedding sand layerA 1-inch layer of coarse concrete sand is screeded to a precise, flat elevation across the entire surface — this is what the pavers sit on and allows final levelling adjustments.
- 4Paver installation & cuttingPavers are laid in the chosen pattern, cut precisely around edges and obstacles, and checked for consistent joint width and level throughout.
- 5Edging restraintsConcrete or aluminium edge restraints are spiked into the base at all perimeter edges to lock the pavers in place and prevent spreading over time.
- 6Plate compaction & jointing sandThe finished paver surface is compacted with a plate compactor (with a rubber pad to protect the pavers), then polymeric jointing sand is swept into the joints and compacted in — locking everything firmly together.
Drainage Systems
Poor drainage is one of the most damaging problems a property can have — and one of the most commonly ignored. Standing water erodes soil, creates slip hazards, breeds insects, damages foundations, and turns lawns into mud pits. Our drainage solutions direct water safely away from your property before it causes problems.
- French drains: Perforated pipe wrapped in filter fabric, buried in gravel — intercepts groundwater and carries it away
- Catch basins: Surface inlets that collect rainwater from driveways, patios, and low spots and route it to a safe outlet
- Swales: Gently sloped channels in lawn areas that guide surface runoff to a defined drainage point
- Downspout extensions & pop-up emitters: Route roof water away from the foundation and release it well away from the house
- Dry creek beds: Decorative stone-lined channels that handle overflow and add visual interest to the landscape
Grading & Levelling
Improper grading — where the ground slopes toward your home rather than away from it — is the root cause of most foundation drainage problems in Hamilton. We use skid steers, laser levels, and fine grading equipment to establish the correct slope profile across your property, ensuring water always flows away from structures and toward safe discharge points.
