Hamilton's Commercial Parking Lot Paving Experts
A well-paved parking lot is more than curb appeal — it's a direct statement about your business. Crumbling edges, potholes, and faded lines signal neglect, while a smooth, well-marked lot signals professionalism and builds customer trust. At Alpha Paving Solutions, we specialize in commercial parking lot installations that handle heavy vehicle traffic, seasonal freeze-thaw cycles, and daily wear — without premature failure.
We work with property managers, business owners, municipalities, churches, schools, and industrial facilities across Hamilton, Burlington, Oakville, and surrounding communities. Whether you're paving a small 10-stall lot or a 500+ stall commercial complex, our process is thorough, our materials are top-grade, and our results speak for themselves.

Our Step-by-Step Parking Lot Paving Process
Commercial paving is more complex than residential — loads are heavier, drainage demands are higher, and there is no tolerance for downtime or re-dos. Here is the exact process we follow on every parking lot project, from the first site visit to the final coat of paint:
-
1Site Assessment & Engineering Review Our project manager visits the property to assess existing pavement conditions, drainage patterns, soil bearing capacity, and traffic volume. For new lots we review grading plans, municipal drainage requirements, and any utility conflicts. We provide a comprehensive written proposal covering scope, materials, specifications, and pricing — with no ambiguous line items.
-
2Demolition & Existing Pavement Removal Old asphalt or concrete is broken up and removed using pavement milling machines, excavators, and bobcats. Demolished material is loaded and hauled to an authorized recycling facility — old asphalt is 100% recyclable and is commonly reprocessed into new hot-mix. We minimize disruption to your business hours and protect adjacent structures throughout demolition.
-
3Subgrade Excavation & Soil Stabilization Excavation is performed to the design depth — typically 12–18 inches for a commercial parking lot, depending on soil type and anticipated load. Weak or organics-laden soil is removed and replaced. In areas with poor bearing capacity, we may install geotextile fabric to separate the native soil from the granular base, preventing migration and maintaining structural integrity over the long term.
-
4Grading & Drainage Design Proper drainage is the most critical factor in pavement longevity. We grade the subgrade and sub-base to direct water to catch basins, swales, or perimeter drains at a minimum 1.5–2% cross-slope. Standing water is an asphalt's worst enemy — it accelerates pavement failure through subgrade softening and frost heave. Our grading crews use laser levels and GPS-guided equipment to achieve precise grades across large areas.
-
5Granular Sub-Base Installation & Compaction A minimum 8-inch layer of Granular A (well-graded crushed stone) is spread in lifts and compacted to 98% Standard Proctor density using vibratory steel drum rollers. For heavy truck lanes or bus areas, we increase the granular depth to 12 inches or more. This load-distribution base is the foundation of your lot's long-term performance — we never skimp on depth or compaction standards.
-
6Curb & Catch Basin Installation Concrete curbs, curb cuts, wheel stops, and catch basins are installed at this stage — before the asphalt is placed. Precast concrete curbs are set to the design elevations and secured. Catch basin frames and grates are adjusted to the final paved surface elevation. Getting this sequence right ensures clean curb transitions and eliminates the need for costly re-work after paving.
-
7Hot-Mix Asphalt Paving Hot-mix asphalt (typically HL3 or HL4 mix design for commercial applications, delivered at 140–160°C) is placed by our commercial-grade asphalt paver in uniform lifts. Commercial lots commonly receive a base course (2.5–3 inches compacted) plus a surface course (1.5–2 inches compacted) for a total of 4–5 inches of asphalt. High-traffic entry and exit lanes are built to greater depth. Our paving crew maintains constant delivery rhythm to prevent cold joints and surface irregularities.
-
8Multi-Pass Rolling & Compaction Steel drum breakdown rollers, pneumatic tire rollers, and finish rollers are deployed immediately behind the paver. Each lift is compacted to 92–95% of maximum theoretical density, verified with a nuclear density gauge. Tight spots around islands, curbs, and catch basins are compacted with plate compactors and hand tampers. The result is a dense, durable surface that resists rutting, cracking, and water infiltration.
-
9Line Painting & Traffic Markings After a minimum 24-hour cure period, our line painting crew applies traffic-grade thermoplastic or solvent-based paint using self-propelled striping machines. We mark standard parking stalls (8.5 ft wide × 18 ft deep), accessible stalls with ISA symbols, fire lanes, stop bars, directional arrows, crosswalks, and any custom markings specified in your site plan. All accessible stall layouts comply with Ontario Building Code and AODA requirements.
-
10Final Walkthrough & Handover Our project manager walks the entire lot with you before signing off. We check surface smoothness, drainage flow (tested with water if needed), curb alignment, line marking accuracy, and overall appearance. Any deficiencies are corrected on the spot. We provide a written warranty and a recommended maintenance schedule covering seal coating, crack filling, and re-striping timelines to maximize pavement lifespan.
